Chapter 8

“So Amy tells me that Reagan is planning to go to Disney World with Kennedy,” I said to Dawson as we drove toward town.

“She is. I’m glad one of her siblings was able to go with her since I was feeling bad that she’d be on her own if I didn’t go as she’d requested.”

“Are you still thinking about taking a road trip?” I asked.

“Maybe. A short one. I’ll play it by ear. I’ve been working on a couple of songs that need a bit of polish before I send them to my agent. I’ve had a lot of distractions as of late, so having some quiet time to work on them should get them to the point where they’re ready to shop.”

“I’d love to hear them.” Dawson was an awesome songwriter who, in my opinion, was good enough to make a career out of it, but he seemed to prefer to dabble with his songwriting rather than committing fully.

“When I’m finished. I shared one with Dax, who, as you know, is a songwriter himself, and while he liked the song okay, even he admitted it needed a little work.”

I wasn’t expecting to get much from the group, figuring that even if one of them was guilty, the fact that no one had come forward seemed to indicate to me that the group as a whole was covering for the guilty party. But once I interviewed them without their peers present, I began to get a picture of an extremely dysfunctional group who likely would have dissolved at some point even if Duke hadn’t decided to go solo.”

I raised a brow. “Really? Based on what I heard at the event, it doesn’t seem that the infighting has hurt the quality of their output.”

“Can you provide an example of this infighting?” Dawson asked.

Colt nodded. “According to Cleo, she’d been dating Reggie until Ella got in the middle of things. She told me that she thought for a while that Ella and Reggie were going to become the new ‘it’ couple, but, according to Cleo, while Reggie seems to be all about Ella, Ella seemed to have set her sights on Duke.”

“Was this before or after Duke and Lola broke up?” I asked, trying to keep up with the complicated web of relationships that appeared to exist between the band members.

“Before,” Colt said. He frowned. “Or maybe during.” He blew out a breath. “I’m not sure, but based on what I
