Chapter 8
âSo Amy tells me that Reagan is planning to go to Disney World with Kennedy,â I said to Dawson as we drove toward town.
âShe is. Iâm glad one of her siblings was able to go with her since I was feeling bad that sheâd be on her own if I didnât go as sheâd requested.â
âAre you still thinking about taking a road trip?â I asked.
âMaybe. A short one. Iâll play it by ear. Iâve been working on a couple of songs that need a bit of polish before I send them to my agent. Iâve had a lot of distractions as of late, so having some quiet time to work on them should get them to the point where theyâre ready to shop.â
âIâd love to hear them.â Dawson was an awesome songwriter who, in my opinion, was good enough to make a career out of it, but he seemed to prefer to dabble with his songwriting rather than committing fully.
âWhen Iâm finished. I shared one with Dax, who, as you know, is a songwriter himself, and while he liked the song okay, even he admitted it needed a little work.â
Dawson pulled into the parking area across the street from the police station. It was quiet in town today, so perhaps Iâd suggest to Dawson that we head over to Velmaâs Diner for a bite to eat after we finished talking to Colt.
After we got out of the car and entered the police station, Colt escorted Dawson and me into the conference room, offered us coffee, and sat down across from us.
âSo, whatâs going on?â I asked.
âI spoke to each band member individually as I indicated that I planned to. I wasnât expecting to get much from the group, figuring that even if one of them was guilty, the fact that no one had come forward seemed to indicate to me that the group as a whole was covering for the guilty party. But once I interviewed them without their peers present, I began to get a picture of an extremely dysfunctional group who likely would have dissolved at some point even if Duke hadnât decided to go solo.â
I raised a brow. âReally? Based on what I heard at the event, it doesnât seem that the infighting has hurt the quality of their output.â
âCan you provide an example of this infighting?â Dawson asked.
Colt nodded. âAccording to Cleo, sheâd been dating Reggie until Ella got in the middle of things. She told me that she thought for a while that Ella and Reggie were going to become the new âitâ couple, but, according to Cleo, while Reggie seems to be all about Ella, Ella seemed to have set her sights on Duke.â
âWas this before or after Duke and Lola broke up?â I asked, trying to keep up with the complicated web of relationships that appeared to exist between the band members.
âBefore,â Colt said. He frowned. âOr maybe during.â He blew out a breath. âIâm not sure, but based on what I
